Flange Considerations

While many of the flanges Tri-Lad manufactures are CSA flanges in Grades from 248 to 483 and beyond; in Weld Neck or Blind configurations, Tri-Lad’s capabilities include the supply of CSA high yield flanges for which no dimensions are published, for example high yield Anchor flanges.

Tri-Lad manufactures the following CSA flanges:

  • Welding Neck

Hub Modifications

CSA specifications allow for the production of high yield flanges in two ways. The most common is the production of a “full yield” flange in which the flange material yield strength matches the yield strength of the mating pipe.

It is also accepted practice to provide “modified hub” flanges which allow for the use of forgings where the yield strength of the forging material is less than the yield strength of the specified pipe material. In this instance the “hub” of the flange may be modified to provide for matching “inside” diameters of the flange and pipe while increasing the “outside” diameter at the point of weld. The new “outside” diameter of the flange is calculated by multiplying the original specified wall thickness by the ratio of the required yield strength over the actual yield strength of the flange. The increase in the “outside” diameter is typically minimal and therefore this option is often accepted.

A typical situation is as follows:

Customer requires
- 16 PN100 WN RF 9.35 mm. wall GR448 flange
Tri-Lad’s inventory
- 16 PN100 WN RF 9.35 mm. GR414 forging
Tri-Lad would offer
- 16 PN100 WN RF GR414 to match 9.35 mm. GR448
